Interactive: Mapping Texas Medicaid Providers

Using the latest billing data available, this interactive map shows where some of the state's most active Medicaid providers are located in Texas — and how much they were reimbursed in fiscal year 2010.

Thousands of entities bill the state for services every year, but we narrowed the list below to account for those providers who many would consider to be the most actively engaged with Medicaid beneficiaries, from hospitals and physicians to advanced practice nurses. For the complete list of provider reimbursements, see this document. (Warning: it's a large file.)

The map below compares the number of residents enrolled in Medicaid by county to the number of providers available by city. By clicking on a city, you'll find out the estimated population of that town and the number of providers, claims and payments associated with Medicaid. It will also load detailed information in the table below. You will also find a complete list of the providers we included for this interactive. To see exactly how many Texans were enrolled in Medicaid by county, see here.

By combining the Health and Human Services Commission data with population estimates from 2010, the Tribune calculated the number of providers per 1,000 people in each of the Texas cities with Medicaid providers. We found there were fewer than two providers per 1,000 people on average. And the number was lower, on average, in cities with populations larger than 50,000.

We created this map as part of a collaborative reporting project between The Texas Tribune and KTRK-TV in Houston. Watch a special report from KTRK's Ted Oberg on the effects of federal health care reform in Houston here.
