Interactive: Visualizing The Congressional Redistricting Proposal

SB 4, the Legislature's attempt at redrawing congressional lines to make room for four new districts, has made its way through the House and Senate. It's now with Gov. Rick Perry, who can sign the bill, veto it or let it rest on his desk to become law on its own. No matter his decision, however, the issue is likely to end up before the U.S. Department of Justice and in federal court.

Even so, lawmakers and other potential candidates are already eagerly eyeing the new territory. District 35, which currently stretches from the southern portion of Travis County and snakes along IH-35 into the heart of San Antonio, could be a battleground for current U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett and State Rep. Joaquin Castro. Former Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams announced earlier this month he has District 33 in his sights.

On the map below, congressional districts as they are currently drawn are to the left of the split; to the right of the split are the districts as redrawn by the Legislature. Click on a district to highlight it in yellow on both sides of the split, and push and pull the map to see how the proposed lines for that district would change.

Bonus feature: Use the search bar to pin an address on the map and zoom in to see exactly how the Lege's changes would affect the particular location.
